Unexplained pre-term birth at just 24 weeks, 1 day gestation. 1 pound, 12 ounces. Just 24 hours past legal viability in Florida. His eyes were fused shut, his ears not yet formed, and his skin translucent and badly bruised from a birth that had come 16-weeks too soon. National statistics gave him just a 39% chance of survival, and his chance of survivial without a significant disability was drastically less. The odds were overwhelmingly against our tiny baby and starting parethood in such cicrumstances was excruciatingly painful. Not only were we in fear of our child's life and his future, but every dream we had about the birth our of baby was shattered in a million pieces on the hospital floor. There would not be the sound of a baby's cry in the devliery room, there would be no photo of the new family with a chubby baby wrapped in a blue and pink recieving blanket, there would be no celebratory cigars, there would be no wheelchair ride with through the front doors of Winnie Palmer Hospical, there would be no laughter, no joy. Instead, there was deep agnony, tears, broken hearts, and an empty bassinet in the delivery room after our son was born. In an instant, we were forced to entrust our most precious gift into the hands of complete strangers.

What we didn't know at the time of Patrick's birth was that these strangers would forever change our lives.

For more than 40 years, the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) has been a leader in the fight to save the tiniest of patients. Walk For Winnie provides all of us in the community the opportunity to join Winnie Palmer Hospital in this fight. Through Walk For Winnie, we will be able to provide funding for the care and treatment of the sickest of babies. Every day, skilled physicians and nurses at the Alexander Center for Neonatology provide the highest level of lifesaving care for critically ill newborns, with one ultimate goal in mind: to help these babies thrive, to help them beat the odds. Please join us in raising funds to support the tiny miracles born in the NICU every single day!
