Welcome to We Are NICU Strong!!'s Team Page

By supporting the Walk For Winnie, we help provide funding for the care and treatment of the sickest of women and babies. Every day, skilled physicians and nurses at the Alexander Center for Neonatology (“NICU”) provide the highest level of lifesaving care for critically ill newborns, with one ultimate goal in mind: to help these babies and their mothers thrive, to help them beat the odds. Please join us in raising funds to support the miracles that happen every day at the Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women & Babies!

Here is the story of our fight and victory through the Winnie Palmer Hospital.

At just 18 weeks gestation and just two days before the planned Christmas Day reveal of the sexes of our twins, we received news that even today causes our hearts to ache. Doctors informed us that our twins were coming and coming soon; in fact, there was a 95% chance the twins would be born in the next few weeks and they would have a limited chance of survival due to prematurity.

Because they were twins, the common treatments to postpone premature birth were not recommended and our doctor at that time said nothing could be done. After seeking second and third opinions, we elected numerous treatments that help postpone births in singlet pregnancies, but had not shown success with twins. One of those measures was bed rest for Karine who was hospitalized at Winnie Palmer Hospital for nearly 4 weeks before babies Emma and Cullen arrived at just 27 weeks gestation. Cullen was 14 inches long and weighed as little as 1 lb, 15 oz. Emma was larger than her brother measuring 14.5 inches long and weighing as little as 2 lbs 1 oz.

After birth, the twins spent the next few months in the NICU under the watchful eye of Dr. Gregor Alexander. During their stay in the NICU, Emma and Cullen received a variety of treatments to address complications associated with their prematurity. 105 days after we were first admitted into Winnie Palmer, we took our children home. Today they are completely normal and healthy 6 year olds thanks to the amazing care and resources provided by Dr. Alexander and everyone else at the Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women & Babies. They have just started First Grade and we couldn't be more thankful!!

There is nothing any of us could ever do that would have a greater impact on the lives of other people than to help save the life of, and care for, a child or a sick mother----that is what they do every day at Winnie Palmer Hospital. Many of the lifesaving resources offered in the NICU are only available because of the financial support provided by members of our community. We have committed to offering our financial support, and ask that you join us. 100% of any contribution you decide to make will go directly towards the NICU and the resources they need to help support the tiny miracles born there each day!
